Lightweight Portable Security (LPS) is a Linux-based live CD with a goal of allowing users to work on a computer without the risk of exposing their credentials and private data to malware, key loggers and other Internet-era ills. It includes a minimal set of applications and utilities, such as the Firefox web browser or an encryption wizard for encrypting and decrypting personal files. The live CD is a product produced by the United States of America's Department of Defence and is part of that organization's Software Protection Initiative.

A new maintenance release was announced earlier today: "A new version of LPS (1.2.2) has been released and is accessible via the web. Changes: fixed a problem with iMac Radeon video drivers; fixed problem with trackpad not working on older MacBooks; Rdesktop - enabled compression to improve performance, fixed problem with cursor control keys not working properly; updated NVIDIA display driver to version 275.09.07; added UVC USB web camera support; added minicom 2.4 as a serial port terminal emulator under the Communications menu; updated Firefox to 3.6.19; updated DOD Configuration add-on to 1.3.1; updated Gmail S/MIME add-on to 0.5.2; updated Flash to 10.3.181.34.

Sabayon Linux is a Gentoo-based distribution which follows the works-out-of-the-box philosophy, aiming to give the user a wide number of applications that are ready for use and a self-configured operating system. Sabayon offers the user an easy-to-use workspace with a captivating look, good hardware detection and a large number of up-to-date software packages installed by default, with additional software available from a repository. Sabayon is available in several flavors featuring respectively the KDE, GNOME, LXDE, Xfce and Enlightenment desktop environments.






Fabio Erculiani has announced the availability of three new Sabayon Linux 6 spins, featuring the Enlightenment 17, LXDE and Xfce desktops: "This is the last set of Sabayon 6 releases, we have Sabayon 6 LXDE, a very lightweight desktop environment for elderly systems, that fits on a single 700 MB CD. Then there is Sabayon 6 Xfce, which has been turned into a valid GNOME alternative, breaking the 700 MB size barrier, provided with multimedia and office applications, NVIDIA, AMD GPU drivers and more. Last and probably least, there is Sabayon 6 E17, it's Enlightenment 17 SVN snapshot, for the brave.

PCLinuxOS 2011.6 - KDE Edition

The KDE edition of PCLinuxOS 2011.6, a new update of the beginner-friendly distribution with rolling-release update mechanism, has been released: "PCLinuxOS KDE 2011.6 for 32-bit and 64-bit computers is now available for download. The Linux kernel was updated to version 2.6.38.8. Additional kernels are available from our repositories such as a PAE kernel for computers with more than 4 GB of memory.

A BFS kernel for maximum desktop performance and a standard kernel with group scheduling enabled. X.Org Server was updated to version 1.10.2. Mesa updated to 7.10.3 and libdrm to version 2.4.26. These updates bring enhancements to the PCLinuxOS desktop including speed, 3D desktop support for most Intel, NVIDIA and AMD/ATI video cards, better font rendering, black screen fixes for most NVIDIA cards, better Flash playback and more."

One of the most popular Linux Distribution is Mandriva. Eugeni Dodonov has announced the availability of the third beta release of Mandriva Linux 2011. This is an unscheduled beta release on the pathway to the delayed 2011 version which is to be followed by a release candidate before the final release on an as-yet-unspecified date. From the release announcement: "As was previously announced on the Cooker mailing list, the Mandriva and Rosa teams have decided that additional time will be needed to finish the stabilization of Mandriva 2011 and Rosa 2011 desktop editions. Therefore I am gladly presenting Mandriva 2011 beta 3. Among the highlights of this release, the following items are present: from now on, the images contain non-free software for improved desktop experience; new UI theme for widgets, KDM and KDE environment, developed by ROSA Labs, is provided by default; new features in system panel, stack folders and system start menu.

Mageia is a fork of Mandriva Linux formed in September 2010 by former employees and contributors to the popular French Linux distribution. Unlike Mandriva, which is a commercial entity, the Mageia project is a community project and a non-profit organisation whose goal is to develop a free Linux-based operating system.

Offensive Security has announced the release of BackTrack 5, an Ubuntu-based security distribution providing a collection of specialist tools for penetration testing and forensic analysis: "The BackTrack development team has worked furiously in the past months on BackTrack 5, code name 'revolution'. Today, Backtrack are proud to release our work to the public, and then rest for a couple of weeks. This new revision has been built from scratch, and boasts several major improvements over all our previous releases. Based on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, Linux kernel 2.6.38, patched with all relevant wireless injection patches. Fully open source and GPL compliant.


BackTrack is an Ubuntu-based distribution with a collection of security and forensics tools. It was created by merging Auditor Security Linux with WHAX (formerly Whoppix).
